Short abstract from the book:Great black-backed gull is a common breeding bird in the Faroes with approximately 1,200 pairs. In the past, the species was intensively persecuted. It is still hunted, although to a lesser extent. 162 have been ringed in the Faroes, most on Svínoy (60). Most were ringed in 1960-63 (61), all of them during the breeding period (8 June – 27 August). 32 great blackbacked gulls have been recovered, four of them abroad. Autumn migration starts in August. 39 great black-backed gulls ringed abroad have been recovered in the Faroes, 24 from Iceland, 11 from Scotland, 3 from Norway and 1 from Russia. Icelandic birds have predominantly (71%) been recovered during autumn (August- December), whereas all Scottish birds were recovered in January-March. The only foreignringed bird recovered in the breeding season was ringed as a chick in Norway the previous year. 87% have been recovered dead, most of them shot.
